“In fashion, we don’t often know the prices,” said Olivier Theyskens, the designer who has taken a fashion sabbatical since leaving Nina Ricci in Paris last March. “We don’t have time to go into the stores.”
The price of luxury fashion has been out of line with reality for some time, and only since the recession have designers bothered to address that fact. Mr. Theyskens, while re-evaluating his place in this world, decided to try something different and designed a collection for Theory, the captain of contemporary fashion, for spring. The prices are a bit higher than those of Theory, but much less than Mr. Theyskens’s work for Ricci, and for Rochas before that.
The clothes, under the label Theyskens’ Theory, are remarkable because they reflect Mr. Theyskens’s signature drainpipe style, but also look like Theory’s urban wardrobe.
The first outfit he showed was a narrow-sleeved leather jacket with a white cotton lining, over trim white jeans that had loose-fitting pockets and rolled cuffs that were sewn to stay rolled. They’ll cost about $240. The jacket is under $1,000. Several of his floaty dresses, made of double layers of Japanese crinkle polyester, cost $690.
