Mick Rock’s career began almost unintentionally, when he sneaked his camera into the rock gigs he went to. In 1972 he met a practically unkown David Bowie and started working regularly with him, largely documenting The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust. This made a legend out of Bowie and Rock himself, who went on to photograph every relevant band both in London and New York: Lou Reed, Syd Barrett, Blondie, Iggy Pop, the Sex Pistols or The Ramones were eager to pose for him.

A carreira de Mick Rock começou quase de maneira intencional, quando ele sorrateiramente levou a sua câmara aos concertos de rock a que assistiu. Em 1972 ele encontrou o quase desconhecido David Bowie e começou a trabalhar regularmente com ele, documentando quase todo o “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust “. Isto fez de David Bowie e do próprio rock uma lenda, e desde aí Mick Rock fotografou todas as mais relevantes bandas em Londres e Nova Iorque: Lou Reed, Syd Barrett, Blondie, Iggy Pop, the Sex Pistols e The Ramones estavam ansiosos para posar para ele.

Mick Rock’s images are as spontaneous, cheeky and apparently shambolic as a punk rock song. With his clichés of intimate and everyday moments he has shaped our image of the 70′s, turning CBGB, Iggy Pop’s edginess and David Bowie’s eccentric looks into cultural icons. But his work did not end with the 1970′s; lately, Rock has been shooting some of nowadays’ best artists such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand and Lady Gaga.

As imagens de Mick Rock são espontâneas, insolentes e aparentemente caóticas como uma canção de rock. Com os seus clichés de intimidade e momentos do dia-a-dia ele moldou a imagem que temos dos anos 70, tornando a provocação de CBGB e de Iggy Pop e os looks excêntricos de David Bowie em ícones culturais. Mas, o seu trabalho não acabou na década de 70; Masi tarde, Mick Rock tem feito shootings dos nossos actuais melhores artistas como de Yeah Yeah Yeahs, franz Ferdinand e Lady Gaga.

This book titled “The Faces of Rock & Roll” collects 200 of Rock’s best photos taken in the last 40 years. A visual celebration for music fans, the book features also a revealing introduction and a foreword by London-based playwright Tom Stoppard.
