Lately I've been musing about Necromancer Games and Playing D&D With Porn Stars, trying to figure out what the hell "Third Edition Rules, First Edition Feel" means. As a matter of fact, we all consider Zak and his campaign to be part of our community. And they definitely are! But the point is: why? They play third edition, although in a very incredible manner. Let alone the various discussions on the topic, I for sure don't blame them for the game they play (for, really, I don't give it a fuck), nor do I think they shouldn't be considered part of the community. My question is, what makes for first edition feel?
I've evidence that you can play AD&D with the same negative vibrations of the worst third edition games. So I really think that the ruleset has little to do with it. I have a pdf copy of Rappan Athuk, and still I can't tell you the point.
