Now that the first character kit has been published, I wonder: should I allow customization through pre-determined character kits or allow a bit more freedom by using simple feats?
Al over at Beyond the Black Gate (a blog from my personal Top 5 Greatest OSR Blogs Ever) has posted this Old School Feats document here, which is pretty awesome. Some of these are really great ("Lucky Bastard", for instance) while others are pretty much what I personally dislike the most in the 3rd and post-3rd edition era (Acrobatic? No, thanks). I'm pretty fine with the concept of "Feats to characterize your character", while not at ease at all with the concept of "Feats to empower your character".
On the other hand, kits are pretty closed and look more like the traditional sub-classes (i.e. Ranger, Paladin, Monk, whatever), but without too much characterization in terms of rules. So I'm just asking, should I bother with them or leave things more "open"? Don't know.
Or maybe I should leave things as they are, allowing only Fighting-Men and Magic-Users "as they are" from the 3LBBs. This would greatly increase simplicity, which should be one of the central features of a Yaqqothl campaign. Got to think about that.
