Parents and teens alike can find a lot of good summer reading in Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Written from the perspective of progress reports from the mentally-challenged protagonist, the story follows Charlie as he volunteers for a human trial of brain surgery in search of the mental stability.
Though a difficult story to read, Flowers for Algernon is a great option to share with your teen to get a conversation started.
The novel is based on an award-winning science fiction short story from 1958.
