mtv movie awards 2009

As the cool and trendy The MTV Movie Awards rolled in to town this weekend, so did the gifting suites leading up to the event. The weather may not have been as summery as one would hope, yet despite overcast skies and cooler-than-normal temperatures, celebs still showed up to get pampered, collect goodies and socialize. That said, here come the best of the 2009 MTV Swag Awards.

The 2009 MTV Movie Swag Award for Best Overall Variety goes to:

The 2009 MTV Movie Award Red Carpet Style Lounge: Held by the Secret Room Events and the SLS Hotel, this is Secret Room's third win in the category. Judging by all the goodies from the gazillion (okay, not quite) vendors - and an additional bonus gift bag upon check-in - we're sure you'll agree :

pentecost sunday

pentecost sunday

I wrote the following "Opening the Word" column for Pentecost Sunday, May 27, 2007, for Our Sunday Visitor:
In the Old Testament the feast of Pentecost (from the Greek word for “fiftieth”) was one of the three great pilgrimage festivals of Israel, a celebration of the spring harvest that took place fifty days after the offering of first fruits at Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For Christians, Pentecost marks the fruits and harvest of another sort. It is a celebration of a formative event in the history of the early Church—the pouring out of the Holy Spirit upon the newly birthed Church and the first bold proclamation of the Gospel by Peter, the head apostle, among the Jews.
“The Church was made manifest to the world on the day of Pentecost,” states the Catechism, “by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

MANILA, Philippines - Dangerous Drugs Board chairman Vicente Sotto III today dared Dr. Hayden Kho Jr. to identify the alleged drug syndicate that supplied his former girlfriend Katrina Halili with the designer drug Ecstasy.Sotto, in a radio interview, challenged Kho, who figured in a sex video scandal with Halili, to name the bigtime drug group."We can't just take his word for it. We want for him to name such a group so we could verify and look into it," Sotto said.

At Thursday's Senate inquiry, Kho claimed that the illegal drugs Halili gave him before they had sex came from a very influential syndicate which has government connections.

Sotto, however, stressed that Kho might just have been misleading the Senate hearing to divert the focus from the sex video issue to illegal drugs.

"It might just be a diversionary tactic," the DDB head said.

It is a "Behind The Kitchen Door" repeat - The Tokyo Hibachi and Sushi in Sherman. Last summer the restaurant scored a "C" on health inspections. Last week inspectors returned and the restaurant received a similar review. KTEN's Katy Blakey has the latest.

The Tokyo Hibachi and Sushi boosts a family-friendly dining experience, but health inspectors had a much different experience just one week ago. Three pages of violations fill these inspections sheets - 24 demerits in all, resulting in a "C" grade

The most critical violation pertained to employee hygiene and hand washing. According to the report, the employee restroom is "soiled" and should be cleaned. There were no disposable paper towels at the wait staff hand sink or the employees restroom hand sink, or the employees restroom hand sink.

french open tennis 2009 schedule

french open tennis 2009 schedule

In a day of upsets at the French Open, the biggest by far was Venus Williams’s loss to Agnes Szavay in an unbelievable scoreline: 0-6, 4-6.
Venus couldn’t believe it, either: “You know, I’m used to beating people 6‑0. I’m not used to my shot not going in and losing a set 6‑0. So it completely was foreign ground for me.”At least she got some revenge later in the day, when she and Serena took out Szavay and Gisela Dulko in the doubles.
What’s bigger news? That Maria Sharapova is into the fourth round of Roland Garros after yet another tough three setter or that the French crowd actually cheered for her? Maria’s take: “You’re ranked outside the top 100, so people like you.” Enjoy it while you can, Maria.

A Lufkin man suffered severe injuries when he blacked out while driving Wednesday morning near Center, according to ShelbyCountyToday.com.
About 8:15 a.m. Robert Ferguson, 29, was traveling east on state Highway 7 west one mile from Center in a 2008 Honda Civic, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Ryan McCasland.
Ferguson's car moved into the westbound lane, striking the back of a 2002 Chevrolet pickup towing a trailer. Ferguson had incapacitating injuries and emergency responders took him to Shelby Regional Medical Center. A medical center spokeswoman said Thursday she had no information on Ferguson.

Faithful Fish is a designer Christian lifestyle clothing company that inspires Christians everywhere to "proudly wear their faith".

The company was started by a 20 year old named Chelsea Eubank. She had been a good Christian and once wanted to express her faith at school. However she couldn’t find anything perfect and ended up creating "Faithful Fish". From Faithful Fish, emerged the idea of Wear It Wednesday.

The “Wear It Wednesday” campaign encourages students to wear their favorite Christian shirt (Christian band, FCA, youth group, etc.) to school on the first Wednesday of each month. The initial goal of the “Wear It Wednesday” campaign is to have 500,000 students log on to www.wearitwednesday.com and register their intention to “wear their faith” on the first Wednesday of each month.

Venus Williams

Hungary’s Agnes Szavay scored the biggest upset of the 2009 French Open so far early on Friday by ousting third seed Venus Williams.

Szavay handed Williams a blistering 6-0, 6-4 defeat to advance into the fourth round of Roland Garros. It was a disappointing performance for the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour’s world number three. She struggled to win her opening matches in three sets against Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova, but today against Szavay she could not force a deciding set.

Although Szavay played more tentatively in the second set, she converted her first match point when a tight backhand by Williams ended in the net.

After starting the 2009 season winless in the first two months, Szavay finished in the fourth round at Miami and Indian Wells and reached the quarterfinals at Acapulco and Madrid.

the new goodnight kiss

the new goodnight kiss

Right under our noses, girls are trading oral sex for pretty shirts and sex for money.
For her new book and film Oral Sex is the New Goodnight Kiss, Canadian journalist Sharlene Azam interviewed teenage and pre-teen girls about sexual attitudes and found many who use sex as currency.
Even in middle-class Canada, girls are being recruited — often by other teens — to provide sexual services to groups of men and boys.
Oral Sex is the New Goodnight Kiss by Sharlene Azam documents the stories of Canadian girls being recruited for prostitution.
It is chilling to sit across from a teenage girl who talks about targeting a pretty, popular girl at her school because she thinks she has everything and is jealous of her

NEW YORK (AP) — The woman who fired a gun at President Gerald Ford in 1975 says in an interview that she believed the country would change only through a violent revolution.
Sara Jane Moore tells NBC's "Today" show that she now realizes the world did not share the radical views that many people held in California in those turbulent times.
The interview broadcast Thursday was her first TV interview since she was released on parole in late 2007, NBC said.
In September 1975, Moore, then 45, fired on Ford as he waved to a crowd in San Francisco. A man near her knocked the pistol out of her hand and the shot went astray. On politics, she said she now knows she was hearing only one side of the story. The radicals were calling for change and she genuinely thought that shooting Ford "might trigger that new revolution."

But just hours before the deadline, Lottery officials announced that a winner came forward.
Two weeks ago, News 8 first reported that Pennsylvania Lottery officials were asking players to check their old tickets.
Pennsylvania Lottery officials announced Wednesday that the winner is Brenda Stover, of New Cumberland. Her ticket was validated Wednesday morning.
Stover took the ticket to a lottery retailer on May 22, where they confirmed it was the $400,000 winning ticket. The ticket was mailed to lottery headquarters in Middletown where officials confirmed Stover as the winner.

The two best teams on the planet battling it out to become undisputed inter-galactic champions of the universe. Barcelona v Manchester United. Messi v Ronaldo. The match of the century. Winner takes all. Loser left to sob into their Nike shirt. The two best attacks in world football. Goals galore. Free-flowing attacking football…

Anyone else think this has got goalless 120 minutes written all over it?! These big build-ups usually result in a bit of an anti-climax. But OTP is glutton for punishment and we are still as exciting and raring to go as a muzzled Wayne Rooney.

PS We should thank Tom Henning Ovrebo for making all this possible!

Brooke Shields is everywhere these days, with people head-butting in her honor and paparazzi stealing her mom. She's also interviewed in Health magazine, where she discusses not losing her virginity until she was 22.(The American average is around seventeen) Instead of being proud of her hold out, she admits regretting it, because her lack of sex had less to do with morals and more to do with insecurities about her body. She attributes a protective weight gain preventing her from feeling attractive and secure enough with her body. That's actually pretty interesting, considering most people think Shields is and always was gorgeous,
and most women probably have equal fears about being seen in the nude at one point or another. When I was growing up, the grossest looking people were always the most casual about sex, which helped me develop a 'sh*t, look at that person,

Mike Tyson's four-year-old daughter died May 26 of injuries sustained in a freak home accident. The champion boxer immediately flew to Arizona.
Exodus Tyson was found Monday morning hanged from a cord that was connected to a treadmill in the family’s activity room in their Phoenix, Arizona home. She was discovered when her mother, who was cleaning in another room, sent the girl’s seven-year-old brother in to check on her.
Police are treating the case as an accident, saying it appears the child was playing on or near the treadmill and became tangled in the cord. The girl’s mother was administering CPR when paramedics arrived on the scene. Exodus died a day later of her injuries.

Red Bull Cola has been banned in six German states for containing traces of cocaine.
The consumer ministries in the two states confirmed they had ordered retailers to pull the drink off their shelves after a food safety institute in North-Rhine Westphalia found the drug in samples. The investigation found the drink to contain a de-cocainized extract of coca leaf in the drink.
Giant German retail group Rewe had already issued orders to remove the fizzy drink from its shops. Wilhelm Deitermann, spokesman for the North-Rhine Westphalia consumer ministry said he expected most – if not all - other German states to follow suit and ban the drink.
Red Bull Cola has protested the action. ‘De-cocainized extract of coca leaf is used worldwide in foods as a natural flavouring,’ said a spokesman.

Sonia Sotomayor, the White House confirms, will be announced as the nominee for the Supreme Court at 10;15 this morning.
POLITICO will be all over all aspects of the choice today, but the key political implication is the obvious one: This is a dramatic symbolic bolstering of Obama's relationship with Hispanics, whose support could ensure his reelection. (Can he be the first Hispanic president too? He's been quietly, respectfully working the community as hard as Bill Clinton did African-Americans.)
The appointment of Sonia Sotomayor to a Supreme Court seat seems to have hit some speed bumps in recent days. Although President Obama has a historic opportunity to appoint the first Hispanic judge in the court's history,

Stories about Sly Stone usually start with the word "reclusive.
Don't call him that anymore, because the superstar who blended funk, rock, soul and psychedelic sounds in the 1960s and '70s before disappearing from the scene in the '80s is not in hiding, his youngest daughter said.
Stone's media shyness in recent decades earned him a comparison to the late billionaire recluse Howard Hughes, but he's just been living his life and making his music out of the glare of great expectations that superstars suffer.
"It's not like he wasn't making music," said Novena Carmel, his 27-year-old daughter. "He was enjoying his life and riding motorcycles, one of his passions."

International community condemns North Korea nuclear test

Reporting from Seoul -- As the international community condemned North Korea's nuclear test and missile launch today, analysts said the tests signaled Pyongyang's growing disillusionment over the U.S. refusal to conduct bilateral talks.
North Korea's ailing leader Kim Jong Il, determined to seek more drastic measures to bring the Obama Administration to the bargaining table, could even carry out more nuclear tests as a way to bully the U.S. and its allies, experts said today.
A Russian news agency reported that an official in North Korea's embassy in Moscow has claimed that new tests would take place "if the United States and its allies continue the policy of intimidation against North Korea," Tass reported.

The women’s game for the French Open 2009 is more open than it has been for a number of years, and the lack of a dominant player means that there are several big contenders for what promises to be a great Roland Garros.
Since gaining the World No.1 ranking in 2008, Roland Garros finalist Dinara Safina has been in great form on the claycourt, picking up two the titles in Rome and Madrid compiling a 14-1 record. Safina's booming groundstrokes and much improved movement have been too much for most players and she goes into the French Open full of confidence. Safina is the favourite with the bookies although she's still value at odds of 4/1 with Blue Square.
Ana Ivanovic has struggled somewhat since lifting the Roland Garros crown twelve months ago, allowing too many errors to creep into her rock solid ground game.

A star defensive end for Kentucky, and one of the key players in Kentucky's Liberty Bowl victory over East Carolina, Jarmon has lost eligibility to play college athletics as a result of testing positive for a banned substance by the NCAA.
Ironically, Jarmon earned praise for his performance in a student production of the play “Weak/Side/Help” on Kentucky’s campus last April. Jarmon excelled in his role as a backup quarterback who experimented with steroid use in an attempt to climb the depth chart.
Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart first spoke at the approximately 25 minute press conference and announced the news. He acknowledged the unusual nature of the press conference, but said that Jarmon requested an opportunity to speak, and the University granted that opportunity due to all that Jarmon had contributed to UK.

While mercilessly devouring cake yesterday here at the office, Google was heard dropping the C bomb. Chrome, that is -- a whole new version of Chrome. Version 2 of Google's lightening-fast Web browser promises new features and even greater speed. But are those promises being upheld, we ask? Well, yes and no, but mostly yes. Features like full-screen browsing and form auto-complete are new to Chrome, though a useful feature of many competing browsers already. But holy fudge: Google has really delivered on the speed front!

Chrome is, by our own benchmarking results, now the fastest browser on the planet at handling Javascript. It has knocked Safari 4 beta and the latest nightly alpha build of Firefox 3.6 (V3.6a1pre), and although not noticeably faster at rendering non-Javascript heavy Web pages, that still means it's the snappiest choice between Opera, IE 8 and Firefox on PC.

Sania, ranked 91, is expected to cross the first hurdle but the Indian can run into a really tough opponent in the second round where she could meet formidable seventh seed Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who is pitted against Claire Feuerstein of the host nation in her opening round.
Sania enjoys a 1-0 lead over Voskoboev with the Indian defeating her Kazak rival in straight sets in San Diego in 2005 in their only outing.
The Indian ace had skipped the last French Open, in fact the entire clay court season, due to a wrist injury. Sania has never moved beyond the second round here and it will be herculean task for her to improve her record.

Like me, many of you have probably noticed that gas prices have been leaping up in spits and starts in and around the Twin Cities of late. As we get closer to the $2.50 mark, I’m beginning to wonder if it will continue to simply rise like it did in 2008 and bite a big chunk out of our drought stricken budgets.
n retaliation I’ve been making use of the Cub Foods gas coupons for several years now, and recently they’ve been giving additional savings if you spend over $150 on groceries. The other day, with over 60c off per gallon in coupons, I saved myself more than 7 bucks on a complete fill up at a Holiday gas station. It all adds up, doesn’t it?

Who Will Win American Idol

Adam Lambert won the evening, but I think Kris Allen will win this year’s “American Idol.”
I’ll leave the debate about whether Lambert lost because he is gay – not confirmed by him, but seemingly confirmed by a campaign to show photos released on the Internet of him kissing men as often as possible – to someone else. Let’s just say Lambert was seen as someone outside of the mainstream and, like any outsider to land mainstream acceptance, he needed to be overwhelmingly better than Allen. Lambert was definitely better, just not overwhelmingly better.
TIE Lambert should have sang something new as his first song.
ADAM Simon Fuller’s choices for them actually did try to play to their strengths.

Washington (dbTechno) - Breast cancer has been diagnosed in a 10-year-old California girl.
The 10-year-old is the youngest girl ever to suffer from breast cancer in the U.S.
The girl, Hannah Powell-Auslam, is now receiving treatment to try and beat the disease.
Needless to say, the diagnosis of breast cancer shocked everyone, including doctors as they have never seen anybody diagnosed at such a young age.
The young 5th grade student told her parents she felt something on her rib cage area.
When doctors checked it out, they found it to be a malignant tumor
The cancer was later found in a lymph node during the mastectomy procedure.
The 10-year-old is going to fully recover, but this is still a shocking case nonetheless.

What was behind this new fad? Are pink flamingos the new must-have for lawn decoration.
I thought this would be unlikely in the neighborhood, an upper-middle class area populated by Los Angeles professionals. Lawn ornaments have symbolic meaning, and pink flamingos—fairly or unfairly—have been linked with a lack of taste and tackiness. Urban professionals, especially in image-conscious Los Angeles, are more likely to try to project an air of sophistication.
Homeowners around here spend a great deal of time and money on their gardens, and very few if any have plastic lawn ornaments. As you can see from the pictures below, many homes have lush landscaping and residents are very devoted to tending them (or paying others to do so). Landscape architects’ signs frequently grace front yards,
