Conan fighting the usual giant snake, how cool is that? |
Here are some possible house rules for a straight Swords & Sorcery, Hyborian-style, Original Edition campaign. Handle with care!
Rulebooks: 3LBBs, Supplements I to IV, Carcosa
Abilities: Roll 3d6 straight down the line for abilities, with the following exceptions:
- Barbarians roll 5d6 for Strength, 4d6 for Constitution and Dexterity (drop the lowest);
- Wizards roll 4d6 for Intelligence and Wisdom (drop the lowest);
- Sorcerers roll 4d6 for Intelligence and Charisma (drop the lowest);
- All female characters roll 6d6 for Charisma (drop the lowest);
Classes: Fighting-men (as usual, included just as servants of sorcerers), Barbarian (as normal warriors, use Strength and Dexterity modifiers from Greyhawk and have the same abilities as a Thief two levels lower, advancement, saving throws and to hit as Fighting-men, HD d12, can't use magic items, Optional: except for magic weapons, can't join forces with Sorcerers), Assassin (as per Blackmoor), Wizard (can use clerical magic, can use good/neutral Magic-user's magic, anything else as a Magic-user of same level, can't join forces with Sorcerers), Sorcerer (can use reversed clerical magic, can use evil/neutral/necromantic Magic-user's magic, can use Carcosan sorcery, anything else as a Magic-user of the same level, can't join forces with Wizards or Barbarians), Witch (only female characters, same stats as a Druid).
Reaching Name Level: Barbarians conquer thrones, Wizards become barbarian's advisers, Sorcerers raise an army of undead to conquer the barbarian's thrones, Assassins eliminate problems and protect their barbarian king and Witches have sex with barbarian kings. It's called "Age of Barbaria" for a reason...
Equipment: Chain/plate mail is found only in very big cities and cost 3 to 5 times the basic price, any other armor can be found only in cities and cost 2 to 3 times the basic price. But you can have sandals for free at the beginning of your career.
Deities: There's a whole plethora of demons, barbarians "worship" Crom.
