Philadelphia Airport

Philly Braces For 12 To 18 Inches Of Snow

A winter storm is already coating streets and highways in southeastern Pennsylvania, and flight cancellations are already being reported at the Philadelphia International Airport.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service say 12 to 18 inches of snow is expected in the city and surroundings areas, with a bit more further south. Officials say 15 to 25 mile per hour winds with higher gusts could produce near-blizzard conditions.

Philadelphia is declaring a snow emergency as of 9 a.m. — meaning cars parked on streets designated snow emergency routes will be towed — and the city school district has canceled all weekend activities. Officials are asking people to avoid travel if at all possible.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says it has been spraying roads with a salt solution since Thursday and all of its 402 trucks have been mobilized throughout the five-county Philadelphia region.
